Check how well your content is optimized for AI citation by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and other generative engines.

What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing your content so that AI-powered search engines and assistants cite it in their responses. When someone asks ChatGPT a question, searches Perplexity, or triggers a Google AI Overview, the AI selects sources to reference. GEO is how you make your content one of those sources.

Traditional SEO focuses on ranking in a list of ten blue links. GEO focuses on being the answer that AI models pull from and attribute. The two disciplines overlap significantly, but GEO introduces new priorities: structured answers, entity clarity, citation-worthy data, and machine-readable formatting.

This free tool analyzes your page across 6 categories that influence whether AI models will select, understand, and cite your content. It does not guarantee AI citation, but a high score means your content is well-positioned for it.

How AI Models Select Sources to Cite

AI models like GPT-4, Claude, and Gemini use retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to find and cite web content. The process generally works in three stages:

  1. Retrieval: The model (or its search layer) fetches candidate pages from the web based on topical relevance. Pages with strong traditional SEO signals, clear structure, and schema markup are more likely to be retrieved.
  2. Comprehension: The model parses the retrieved content. Pages with clear headings, definition sentences, lists, and short paragraphs are easier for models to extract information from. Ambiguous or poorly structured content is often skipped.
  3. Citation: The model selects which sources to attribute. Content with specific data points, named entities, authoritative links, and clear authorship is preferred. The model needs to trust that the source is credible and the information is current.

Each of the 6 categories in this tool maps to one or more of these stages. Improving your GEO score means making your content easier to retrieve, comprehend, and cite.

GEO vs. Traditional SEO

GEO and SEO share the same foundation, but they optimize for different outcomes. Here is how they compare:

AspectTraditional SEOGEO
GoalRank in top 10 resultsBe cited in AI-generated answers
Content formatKeyword density, lengthDirect answers, structured data, lists
Trust signalsBacklinks, domain authorityAuthorship, data citations, schema
StructureH1, H2 for user scanningH1-H3 hierarchy for machine parsing
FreshnessHelpful, not always criticalStrongly preferred by AI models
EntitiesHelpful for topical authorityCritical for AI comprehension

The good news: strong SEO is a prerequisite for GEO. If your content already ranks well, you are partway there. GEO adds a layer of optimization focused on how AI models read, extract, and attribute your content.

GEO Best Practices

Do

  • • Start sections with clear definitions ("X is a...")
  • • Use lists and tables to present structured information
  • • Include specific statistics with attribution
  • • Add JSON-LD schema (Article, FAQPage, HowTo)
  • • Show author name, publish date, and modified date
  • • Link to authoritative sources (.gov, .edu, research)
  • • Keep paragraphs to 3-4 sentences maximum
  • • Add a summary or key takeaways section

Don't

  • • Write long, unstructured walls of text
  • • Skip heading hierarchy (e.g. H1 straight to H4)
  • • Publish without a publish date or author name
  • • Rely on images alone to convey key information
  • • Use vague language without specific claims or data
  • • Ignore schema markup and Open Graph tags
  • • Publish thin content under 500 words
  • • Block AI crawlers in robots.txt
