Project Settings & Configuration
After creating a project, you can adjust its settings at any time. This article covers the configuration options available in project settings.
Note: For creating a new project, see Setting Up Your First Project.
Accessing Settings
- Open the project you want to configure.
- Click "Settings" or the settings icon.
Tracking Configuration
These settings determine how Content Raptor checks your rankings. Incorrect settings mean you'll see rankings for the wrong audience — for example, tracking mobile rankings in the UK when your customers search on desktop in the US.
Location
The geographic area used for ranking checks. Choose the location where your target audience searches.
- National targeting — Select a country (e.g., "United States")
- Local targeting — Select a city if you serve a specific area (e.g., "Chicago, IL")
Tip: If most of your traffic comes from a specific country, use that country. If you are a local business, use your city. Check your analytics to see where your visitors come from.
Device Type
Whether to track desktop or mobile rankings. Desktop and mobile search results often differ significantly — Google shows different competitors and rankings for each.
- Desktop — Best for B2B, professional services, or research-heavy topics
- Mobile — Best for B2C, local businesses, or quick-answer queries
- If unsure, check your analytics to see which device brings more organic traffic
Search Engine
The search engine to track rankings on (e.g., Google, Bing). Most users should track Google, since it handles the vast majority of search traffic.
Language
The language setting for search results. Match this to the language your content is written in.
Competitors
Add competitor domains to compare your rankings against theirs. You can remove competitors at any time from this same settings page. See Tracking Competitor Rankings for details on how to use competitor data.
Keyword Tags
Organize keywords with tags so you can filter and report on subsets of your keyword list. Tags are especially useful for:
- Campaign tracking — Tag keywords by marketing campaign to measure results separately
- Content categories — Group keywords by topic area (e.g., "product pages", "blog posts")
- Priority levels — Mark high-value keywords for focused monitoring
Well-organized tags make the Ranking History page much more useful, since you can compare trends across up to 3 tag groups.
Common Questions
Can I change the domain?
You can update the domain in project settings, but this affects which URLs are matched to your rankings. It is usually better to create a new project for a different domain rather than changing an existing one.
Can I delete a project?
Yes. Deleting a project permanently removes all keyword tracking data, ranking history, and competitor data for that project.
Do setting changes affect historical data?
No. Changing location, device, or language settings affects future ranking checks only. Historical data from before the change is preserved.
