What is Readability?
Readability measures how easy it is for readers to understand your written content. It considers factors like sentence length, word complexity, and overall text structure. Higher readability means more people can quickly understand your message.
Why Readability Matters for SEO
- User Engagement: Content that's easy to read keeps visitors on your page longer, reducing bounce rates.
- Wider Audience: Lower reading levels make your content accessible to more people, including non-native speakers.
- Featured Snippets: Google often selects clear, concise content for featured snippets and voice search answers.
- Mobile Experience: Shorter sentences and simpler words work better on small screens.
- Conversion Rates: When people understand your message quickly, they're more likely to take action.
Understanding Readability Scores
Flesch Reading Ease
A score from 0-100 where higher is easier to read:
Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level
This score indicates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. A score of 8.0 means an 8th grader could understand it. For most web content, aim for grades 7-9.
Gunning Fog Index
Similar to Flesch-Kincaid, but places more emphasis on "complex words" (those with 3+ syllables). A score of 12 means roughly 12 years of formal education are needed. For broad audiences, aim for 8-12.
